Wet May Weekend Ahead?

April showers bring May flowers...right? Oh it's gonna be May this weekend. Well, a couple early showers in May won't hurt anybody. We sure need the moisture!! Yes, it looks like rain this weekend and maybe even into early next week. Well, regardless there is still plenty to enjoy in Tahoe over the next week including skiing across water and of course Cinco de Mayo!

The Annual Lake Cushing Crossing is scheduled to take place this Sunday at Squaw Valley USA. The Cushing Crossing is a wacky end of the season event in which contestants attempt to cross a pond at the bottom of the ski hill on skis, snowboards, or other improvised water crossing devices. Participate if you are brave enough, but if you are not join the celebration as a spectator. Stand back if you want to stay dry! (May be rescheduled if there is bad weather).

Cinco de Mayo will be celebrated in many ways and locations in North Lake Tahoe and Truckee. One of the most convenient for Tonopalo owners and perhaps the most thorough around the lake is taking place at Caliente in Kings Beach. The celebration will begin on Friday and continue through Tuesday, the traditional holiday date (yeah....the 5th of May). So stop by one night (or day) during your stay to take advantage of the great specials. Click Here for a full schedule and call me if you are looking for other options.

It looks like some wet weather is on tap for the weekend but I am thinking we are going to see clearing early next week which will make for some great hiking and biking conditions. If I'm right about the weather and you're still in the neighborhood check out the Sagehen Creek trail. Just north of Truckee on highway 89 this trail should be clear of snow and offers a great early season hike or bike.

Other Notes: Squaw Valley is still open and operating, Brockway Golf Course in Kings Beach and Ponderosa Golf Course in Truckee are now open for the season.

At Tonopalo: The buoys are scheduled to be in the water by the weekend and there are kayaks on the beach....one step closer to summer!

I-80 Roadwork: Remember there is roadwork going on on I-80 right now! Visit http://www.getacross80.com/ for more information and detour times. Don't make the drive longer if you don't have to!

Ski or Golf? What to do?

Well, it's that time of year...."the offseason". Ha!, not here! This is the best time of year in Tahoe in my opinion. Ski in the morning, golf in the afternoon.....or hike in the morning and when you hit the snowline throw on the snowshoes. You can do it all! Golf courses are opening, tennis courts are clear, bike paths have been swept, AND chairlifts are still spinning!...not to mention the fact that you have just about everything to yourself.

On the ski front, Squaw Valley is still open and operating and KT-22 is open through this Sunday and there are $20 lift tickets being offered this Sunday in conjuction with the 101.5FM pool party at high camp. With temperatures scheduled to be below freezing at night it should keep the snow and spring skiing pretty good. So get out for those last days!

Old Brockway Golf Course is now open for the season! Just down the street from Tonopalo, Brockway offers great rates and a classic Tahoe golfing experience. Call for tee times and 2009 rates.

So there is still a lot of snow in the high sierra, but trails are clearing at lake level and in the Truckee area. Don't be afraid to bring the bike or the hiking boots this trip. I have seen a lot of bikers along 89 and around the lake and most say it is a great time to be riding because it is not too hot yet and the road traffic is still very light. If you want to hike try something low elevation in the North Tahoe Regional Park or the Emigrant Trail in Truckee.

I-80 Roadwork: Remeber there is roadwork going on on I-80 right now! Visit http://www.getacross80.com/ for more information and detour times. Don't make the drive longer if you don't have to!

Earth Day

What a wonderful weekend for an Earth Day celebration with blue skies and temperatures forecast to be near 70 degrees!

Squaw Valley is hosting the North Lake Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival 2009 this weekend. This year's theme is "Living Local". The celebration will include live music, an eco-parade, and a number of vendors educating and promoting eco products. This is a great event for the whole family if you are not skiing this Saturday...or even after a great day on the hill.

If you are going to ski this weekend take advantage of a $25 ticket to Squaw Valley on Sunday! Squaw is sponsoring a Skiing for Schools day. Tickets CANNOT be purchased at the resort and must be pre-purchased at Porters Ski Shop (Tahoe City, Truckee, or Incline) or online at http://www.exined.com/.

The ski season is over for some including Alpine Meadows and Northstar. The two resorts will be closed for the season after skiing on Sunday. Northstar is offering a $40 ticket good for both Saturday and Sunday this weekend in celebration of earth day. This ticket can only be purchased online and is obviously a heck of a deal!

Alpine Meadows will host a variety of events for their closing weekend including live music, a snow golf tourney, and the mad cow downhill (a chinese downhill style race). Visit their website for all the event details.

There is a lot going on this weekend in Tahoe and again, it is gonna be Gorgeous! So, get to the hill, the earth day celebration, or just grab a chair and get some early season beach time in at Tonopalo.

Happy Easter

Well, it's Easter weekend in the sierra an of course there's snow....well for now anyway. It is snowing as I write this but it looks as though it will clear up for the weekend and for the early part of next week. Should be back to great spring skiing! Visit the Tahoe Weather Geek for a great local forecast or another favorite of mine Weather Underground for a 7 day forecast.

There are Easter festivities just about everywhere this weekend including the regular brunches and Easter egg hunts. Northstar and Alpine will be hosting on hill Easter egg hunts for the kids and Squaw Valley will have the bunny out as well. Alpine Meadows will actually have a golden egg located on the ski hill that contains a 2009/2010 midweek season pass....so keep your eyes out for that one!

Another popular Easter activity is brunch of course and just about every area restaurant is hosting such an event. One of my favorite Easter brunches is at Moody's Bistro in Truckee. Have a great big brunch with the family and walk it off by perusing the local shops in historic downtown Truckee.

Lastly, summer road work has already started!! Evening and nighttime road work is planned on I 80 throughout the summer. Here is a map of detours or you can visit http://www.getacross80.com/ for more detailed information. Don't sit in extra traffic if you don't have to!
