Smoke on the Water

We should be very thankful that it is just smoke and not fire, but it is unpleasant nonetheless. With fires raging all over California Lake Tahoe has been covered in a thick haze for the better part of a week now. Physical outdoor activity is being discouraged, but hopefully by the weekend favorable weather conditions will relieve us of at least some of the smoke.
EVENTS Visit Tahoe City on Sunday evening for the free Concerts at Commons Beach. Running every Sunday through the summer these free concerts run from 4pm-7pm on Sunday evenings. This week features Aphrodesia. This should be a great event for the whole family.

Head back to Tahoe City Monday night for the Lakeside Summer Movie Series also at Commons Beach. This week's featured movie is August Rush (PG 133mins.) starting at dusk on July 2nd.

DINING AND ENTERTAINMENT Northstar is now hosting Moody's Mondays throughout the summer. This is a seasonal summer event that is not to be missed. Excellent live jazz and a casual atmosphere pair nicely with chef Estee's amazing culinary creations. For a great night out put this event on your calendar. Reservations are necessary and may be made by calling 530-587-8688.

FIREWORKS Remember there are fireworks in Kings Beach on Thursday night the 3rd of July. I know 4th of July falls on an odd day for Tonopalo owners, but whether you are here the week before or the week after you will still be able to enjoy Independence Day fireworks at Lake Tahoe.

TONOPALO REAL ESTATE Home #8 is still a great opportunity listed at $325,000. Do you know anyone interested in homes at Tonopalo? Now is the time to make an offer! Visit http://www.tonopalosales.com/ for more information on available shares or call me directly.

Do you Facebook? Come join the group Tonopalo to view and post pictures, tell everyone about your great stay, and keep up with other owners and staff (past and present). Visit the Tonopalo Facebook Group now.

"School's out for summer...." I hope that is true for most of the kids out there now because it is a great time to be up here!!

EVENTS I mentioned it last week, but I am going to write about it again because it is such a fun event. The Tour De Nez will be in North Lake Tahoe and Truckee this weekend with events in Thursday in Truckee and on Thursday Friday and Saturday at Northstar. I know I wrote about this before, but it is a really fun event for the cycling enthusiast, casual rider, and even non rider. Pick up a local paper for a schedule of events or visit http://www.tourdenez.com/.

The Village at Squaw will also be hosting a fine arts festival this weekend (open from 10-5 both Saturday and Sunday). The cable car opens for the summer this weekend as well if that is any more incentive to head out to the valley.

The Rodeo is in town!! Well, in Reno at least. If you want to really experience a night right out of the old west head down to Reno one night during your stay to experience the rodeo. This is really a fun time filled with great spectator events, rides, and of course plenty of BBQ and cotton candy.

Billed as the "Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West", the Rodeo runs every night in Reno from June 19th - June 28th. Visit their website for more information and event times http://www.renorodeo.com/.

JET SKIING Bentley and his brother Ronnie are renting jet skis to Tonopalo owners and guests for their second summer now and with great rates the jet skis are getting booked fast. So act now if you are interested in reserving some time on these fun toys. Call the Tonopalo front desk for more information. I know you have the number, but here it is again just in case 530-546-6500.

HIKING At this point in the summer the snow is receding rapidly and the trails are in most cases totally clear and accessible. So take advantage...I would almost recommend looking for the snow. Not only will run off keep the dust down, but it just fun to be standing in the snow on an 80 degree day looking down at people playing golf and boating.

My recommendation would be to visit Barker Pass off of highway 89. Going up this road will give you some elevation gain and you can drive directly to the Pacific Crest Trail. This website gives good directions hiking north to Twin Peaks on the PCT or this site gives directions south to Richardson Lake. For a more moderate hike try the hike to Ellis Peak for great views!! Have fun and take plenty of water.

Summertime!

Summer At Tonopalo!!!

With temperatures expected to be in the 80's this weekend Summer at Lake Tahoe should be in full swing! So I am going to start of with the obvious choice for entertainment, Boating!

BOATING Kayaking, Sailing, Jet Skiing, or a ride on the Tonopalo Formula, take your pick. This weekend should be a prime boating weekend. Warm temperature and small breezes will make for great lake time, whether you are enjoying any of the above activities.

Reserve a jet ski now from Thomas Brothers Moto Sports, just call the Tonopalo front desk for more information and rates. Or, book the Tonopalo Formula for a lake tour or just some time on the water.

The staff is in the process of putting sailboats together this week as well, so if the afternoon breeze picks up take a sail.

The Lake was pretty calm Friday morning, a great time for a paddle.....

EVENTS This week North Lake Tahoe and Truckee are hosting the Tour De Nez! The Tour De Nez is a great biking event that can be enjoyed by all, whether you are a biking enthusiast or not. I have never stepped on a road bike in my life, but over the past couple years I have truly loved watching the Truckee criterium (the criterium is about a one mile loop around downtown Truckee that is raced for 60 minutes and at the last lap the bell is rung and the first person across the line wins. It is a great spectator event). It really gives you an appreciation for the sport and it is exciting to watch!! The Schedule of events is on the website.

NEWS Sadly, a bear was put down on the west shore this week. A resident had been leaving their dog tied up outside and the young cub decided to come enjoy the dogs food and also befriend the dog as a playmate. Unfortunately the bear became accustomed to eating the food and visiting the house daily. The residents enjoyed the show and one day came to close and the bear swiped at her leg. After alerting the authorities they had no choice but to kill the bear (there is a clear policy that any bears that are aggressive with humans must be put down).

This is a very sad story which could have all been avoided for the bear if these residents had any bear sense. Please remember to keep your distance from these animals and never ever feed the bears. It is for your safety and also theirs!

Come up and Play

It looks like another beautiful weekend is in store for us up here at the lake. Sunny skies and slightly cooler temperatures will make it a great weekend to play outside in the sierras. The hiking, biking and of course boating are all phenomenal right now.

EVENTS San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsome will be at Squaw Valley this Friday sharing his views on risk taking in politics with the Squaw Valley Institute. The program will take place at the PlumpJack Conference Center in Squaw Valley starting at 7:00PM. Tickets available online at http://www.squawvalleyinstitute.org/ up to 24 hours before event or at door if space allows. Donation to Squaw Valley Institute requested: $10.00. Children and students with ID are FREE.
North Tahoe Cleanup Day takes place this Saturday the 7th with registration taking place in Tahoe Vista and Kings Beach at 9:00AM. Those interested in cleaning up Kings Beach can register in the conservancy lot next to Enviro Rents at the corner of Hwy 28 and Coon Street; registration for Tahoe Vista and Carnelian Bay is at the Tahoe Vista Rec Area. Maps will be on hand at registration tables to designate clean up areas. All clean up volunteers and participants will receive a blue recycle bag, gloves, Sunflower seeds and a 2008 Clean Up Day T-shirt.
There is also a special BBQ after clean up featuring food from Blue Onion Cafe and Catering, live music compliments of Fearless Chicken and raffle prizes for all volunteers. The BBQ will be at North Tahoe Beach across the street from Safeway in Tahoe Vista.

This is a great community event and if you have other plans take to the spirit of the day by picking up a few pieces of trash, whether off the beach in front of Tonopalo or wherever you end up this Saturday!

BOATING It is finally starting to warm up, but the lake is still quiet so get out there and enjoy it! Call the front desk to book the Tonopalo Formula or some Jetskis if you really want to get adventurous.

KAYAKING With clear skies and calm weather expected why not get out on the lake for a paddle? Grab a kayak on the Tonopalo beach and explore the nearby shoreline in the afternoon or be the early riser and paddle over to Kings Beach for coffee and a breakfast bagel at Java Hut (it is about a 1.5 mile paddle each way).

TONOPALO REAL ESTATE Home #8 is now priced at $325,000. This is a steal for this home! 2300 square feet with 3 bedrooms and a den! Visit http://www.tonopalosales.com/ for more information on available shares.
